How to Prepare for a Holiday in the Peruvian Andes (Without Losing Your Mind or Your Socks)

So you’ve decided to go to the Peruvian Andes—land of ancient ruins, alpacas with better hair than you, and more altitude than your lungs ever asked for. Congratulations! You’re about to experience one of the most breathtaking (literally) destinations on earth. But before you hop on a plane and start dreaming of Machu Picchu selfies and quinoa everything, let’s talk preparation. Because the Andes don’t mess around. Here’s how to get ready like a pro… or at least like someone who won’t cry on day two of the Inca Trail.

1. Train for Altitude… or At Least Stop Taking the Elevator

Let’s address the elephant—or should we say llama—in the room: altitude. The Andes are
high. Like, “I-just-walked-up-some-stairs-and-now-I-need-a-nap” high.

If you live near sea level and your main form of exercise is lifting snacks to your mouth (no
judgment), you might want to get moving before your trip. Take the stairs. Go for hikes. Practice
breathing heavily while doing very little. It’ll be great prep.

And don’t forget to pack coca tea or chew some coca leaves when you get there. It’s legal. It’s
local. It helps. And yes, it tastes like earthy green tea mixed with “why am I doing this?”

2. Pack for All Four Seasons… and Then Some

Packing for the Andes is like packing for an emotionally unstable climate.
In one day, you can go from sweating in the sun to shivering in a blizzard to wondering if that
rain is horizontal. So remember the sacred Andean rule: layer like an onion.
What you’ll need:
● A sun hat (because Andean sun = solar-powered frying pan)
● A down jacket (yes, even in “summer”)
● Good socks (your toes will thank you)
● And a rain poncho that makes you look like a soggy superhero
Also, leave room for souvenirs. Because you will buy that rainbow alpaca sweater. Everyone
does.

3. Learn the Local Language… or At Least Smile a Lot

People speak Spanish in most of Peru, but in many Andean towns, Quechua is still the heart
language. Learning a few key phrases will win you friends and probably free potatoes.
Start with:
● Allinllanchu = Hello
● Sulpayki = Thank you
● Maypi Kachkanchis? = Where the heck are we?
When in doubt, smile, point politely, and maybe offer chocolate. Works almost every time

4. Embrace the Unexpected

In the Andes, buses sometimes turn into parties, llamas can cause traffic jams, and your
guide might stop mid-hike to make an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). This is not
your all-inclusive resort.
Bring flexibility, a sense of humor, and a small roll of toilet paper (trust us)

5. Come Hungry

Peruvian Andean food is no joke. From roasted corn the size of your thumb to alpaca steak
(sorry, cute llamas), your taste buds are in for a ride. Try the huatia—an earth oven-cooked
potato feast—and wash it down with chicha morada or inca kola (the neon yellow soda that
somehow tastes like bubblegum and childhood)

Final Tip? Go With Curiosity.

You’re not just visiting a place—you’re stepping into a world where mountains are sacred,
people are warm, and the air is thin (seriously, hydrate). Embrace it all. Even the altitude
headaches. Even the baby goats in sweaters. Especially those.

Buen viaje!

Now go pack your poncho and sense of adventure. The Andes are calling
