Nature experiences
Peru is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. It ranks first in species diversity of fish and butterflies, second in birds, and third in mammals and amphibians. It is home to 10% of the world’s flora! Its biomes (regions) include mountainous, marine, and jungle.
The 2,400 km (1,500 mi) of Pacific coastline combines marine and desert environments with vast colonies of seabirds, sea lions, penguins, and dolphins. The warm northern waters are the perfect ecosystem for whale and turtle watching, generally from August to October.
The Andes are home to the condor, which inspired successive ancient civilizations, the spectacled bear, the puma, and also camelids such as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. East of the Andes, the cloud forest is a paradise for orchids and birds, and is home to beautiful endemic species such as the spatule-tailed hummingbird and the cock-of-the-rock. Finally, the lowland forests and lagoons of the Amazon are home to river otters, tapirs, jaguars, anacondas, and 30 species of primates.
